Earlier this week I met with an elderly client who wants to do some long term care planning as her husband is ill and might have to spend time in a nursing home. Unfortunately, she and her husband have waited a little too late to maximize their planning options. We can help them, but not as much as we could have if the clients hadn’t put off coming to see us. If they had come to us when he first became ill (close to 10 years ago), we may have been able to help them significantly more. I think the husband was putting things off, hoping his health would not deteriorate, but it has. Now his wife is under a great deal of stress wondering how they will be able to finance quality care.
Of course no one likes to plan for unpleasant circumstances, but the attorneys at SBWP think an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
We even recommend long term care insurance to young couples that are just married and starting family. Why? Because unfortunately tragic accidents can happen at any time – accidents where a spouse may require a long term stay in a rehabilitation facility.
And if you don’t have a policy beforehand, we certainly recommend that you start planning at the onset of a diagnosis. Seeing a loved one go through an illness is extremely difficult on all involved. The best time to get legal plans in place is right away when your loved one is still relatively healthy and can specify his or her wishes. This will help ease an already confusing and difficult time to come.
Our team at SBWP wants to make sure you and your family have the care you deserve. We are dedicated to providing the best legal support to our clients, and the earlier we can begin the process, the better. Unlike many law firms, an attorney from SBWP is directly involved in every case, because we believe our clients deserve that personal attention.
