We all know phones can be a bad thing in the car as they cause distractions and even wrecks. But did you know that the same phone could also serve as the greatest tool in your car in case you do wreck? While the attorneys at Skeeters, Bennett, Wilson & Pike certainly don’t condone using your smartphone while driving, we do recommend always having your phone with you while in the vehicle.
In the event of an accident, your smartphone can help you by:
1. Getting ahold of important contacts.
Your smartphone can help you call for help after a crash. Our attorneys suggest programming the following numbers into your phone before the next time you get into the car:
- Non-emergency phone number like your local police station; typically, phones already are equipped with some sort of 911 function. Most accidents occur within 25 miles of the driver’s home.
- Your insurance agent’s phone number.
- The phone number for the claims department of your insurance company.
2. Containing Helpful Apps
There are many apps that can be helpful after a crash. We recommend having a flashlight app in case of a nighttime wreck. This can help you search for things such as your insurance card and auto registration, while also allowing you to diagnose the damage.
Many insurance companies have also developed their own car accident apps. Check with your insurance company to see if they provide one. If so, it can save a lot of time and hassle in connecting with your insurance.
3. Taking Photos
Your smartphone is extremely handy for capturing photos at the scene. Make sure to take all sorts of photos from every angle, not only on your car, but the other involved vehicle(s). These photos can help the police and insurance adjusters do their jobs much easier.
While your phone can be an enemy to safe driving it can also be very helpful. Make sure you know how to use your phone properly in your vehicle.
