What We Know So Far About the Louisville UPS Flight 2976 Crash

  • Location of Crash:
  • UPS Cargo Aircraft Involved:
A UPS MD-11 cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday. The impact caused a devastating fire and sent heavy black smoke across the city skyline.
  • Cause and Sequence of Events:
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a large fire developed in the plane’s left wing immediately after takeoff clearance. Airport security video shows the left engine detaching from the wing during the takeoff roll. The aircraft briefly gained altitude, clearing the fence at the end of the runway before crashing just outside the airport grounds.

The crash caused an explosion and intense fire that spread to nearby businesses. Investigators have recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, as well as the detached engine, which was found on the airfield. Officials described a debris field stretching for half a mile.
  • Fatalities and Injuries Reported:
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed that at least 12 people were killed, including a child. Eighteen others were treated for injuries at local hospitals, with two people remaining in critical condition.  Officials have cautioned that these numbers may change as recovery efforts continue. Governor Andy Beshear said it was unlikely additional survivors would be found.
  • Businesses and Sites Affected:
The crash and explosion struck multiple facilities near the airport, including Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts, triggering secondary explosions. Governor Beshear noted it was a “blessing” the plane did not strike nearby sites such as the Ford Motor Company plant or the Kentucky Exposition Center.
  • Airport Operations Impacted:
Passenger flights in and out of Louisville have resumed on a limited basis, though significant delays remain as only one runway is currently operational.
  • Ongoing Federal Investigation:
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The NTSB continues to investigate the cause of the disaster, focusing on the left wing fire, engine separation, and potential fuel system issues. Experts note similarities between this crash and a 1979 incident involving an American Airlines DC-10, which shared a similar engine configuration.
